Drain Rods

All of our team of serviceman carry pvc manual drain cleaning rods with them in their service vehicles. These drain rods are light, very flexible and easily transported to any location up and down steps, pathways and hillsides around Wellington's unique region. The drain rods have different heads that can be screwed onto them for different drain blockage situations. Rods are inserted into the sewer or stormwater drain through a rodding access point or down through a vent pipe. Drain rods used by hand will clear most drain blockages in either sewer or stormwater drains.

Electric Drain Cleaner Machine

This machine is also refered to as an electric eel or plumbers snake.the machine is normally used after the serviceman has tried to clear the drain with manual drain rods and has been unsuccessful. The electric machine is heavy, it requires a power source and a level space close to an access point of the drain that you are clearing for ease of operation. Access to the drain can be gained via a rodding eye, vent pipe or through a gully trap etc so therefore sometimes no digging is required to clear a blocked drain using an electric drain cleaning machine.

Different cutting heads can be attached to this machine and then can be inserted into the drain. The electric power source operates the electric motor that rotates the cutting head which is inserted into the drain. The cutting head is driven down the drain untill it makes contact with the blockage, then the cutter will cut the blockage out. At the same time as the machine is in the drain, water is being constantly flushed and running down the drain so that when the blockage has been freed up the water will send all of the blockages downstream of the affected section of drain. When the water level drops in the drain, then you can tell that the drain is clear and running freely.

Just because your drain gets running, it dosent mean that your drain will run clear forever as drains only block up for one reason, that is, their is a problem in the drain and it needs to be repaired or it will definetly block up again in the very near future.

Earthquakes

Because Wellington is situated right on the top of an earthquake fault line, the ground has been subjected to numerous earthquakes over the many years since an old house has been built. Old house drains were made of earthenware [terracotta] pipe which get broken during an earthquake. In most cases we find that the blockage in a drain was caused by tree roots searching for water. The roots grow along drain sucking up the moisture as they go along the top of the drain. Moisture is always on the outside of the drain because of the hot water running though the drain and the ground is cold so therefore moisture is created on the outside of the pipes. When the roots find the cracks in the pipes they enter into the pipes and grow into massive lumps of roots because they are feed nutrients from the sewerage passing through the drain. These massive lumnps of roots are what block the drains up and are very hard to get rid of.
